Particularly successful has been the patented sandstone acidizing
process that uses a carbon dioxide formation preconditioner. This
process, which has been licensed to Halliburton Energy Services, BJ
Services and Dowell Schlumberger, is described more completely in one
of the attachments as well as in technical papers published by the
Society of Petroleum Engineers. It has been used most often on
gravel-packed completions offshore in the Gulf of Mexico
The strength of the process, in comparison with conventional sandstone
acidizing, is that it apparently does not stimulate water production
preferentially. Additionally, more effective damage removal is evidenced
by the low skin factors and high well productivities actually obtained.
Finally, unlike conventional acidizing, spent acid returns from the process
seldom upset surface separation facilities. With such success, several
companies have used the process on some of their most critical and
expensive wells.
